"Crazy Cukkad Family' is funny, but for the wrong reasons"

CAST: Swanand Kirkire, Shilpa Shukla, Kushal Punjabi, Siddharth Sharma, Ninad Kamat

DIRECTION: Ritesh Menon

GENRE: Comedy

DURATION: 1 hour 45 minutes

STORY: A tragicomedy of sorts, the film revolves around four estranged siblings of the Beri parivar, who unwillingly unite in order to get their share of property from their dying father.

REVIEW: Pawan (Swananad Kirkire), Archana (Shilpa Shukla), Aman (Kushal Punjabi) and Abhay (Siddharth Sharma) are the bickering siblings who suffer from family-phobia. They can't stand each other, their respective spouses or parents, but their common need (money) draws them together. News of their father breathing his last makes them rush back to their family home 'Beri villa' as each expects a share of his property. However, things go topsy-turvy when their lawyer informs them of their father's last wish. Can this 'task' bring the madcap family together?

If you give a funny twist to a probable sequel of Baghban, it could end up looking like this. It revolves around greedy siblings who are more concerned about their dad's property over his well-being, their sanskari mother who sees through their selfish motives and yet welcomes them, a righteous, loyal non-biological beta (servant Manohar here) who is considered to be a 'doting son' by the dying father, et al.

The film scores as far as performances are concerned, especially from Shilpa Shukla and the multifaceted Swanand Kirkire. The latter walks away with the best lines and does complete justice to them, too. For instance, the scene in which he unintentionally asks his firang sister-in-law to sit next to him, all the while pointing to his lap, evokes peals of laughter. Ninad Kamat as Archana's modest husband pulls off his partially funny, mostly tragic character with ease as well. His unique way of venting out his pent up emotions takes the cake.

However, what puts a break on this potentially quirky laughter ride is its predictable story. From a gay love track and happily-ever-after climax to the property dispute... you can foretell every twist in the plot. Also, jokes about item girl Cherry doing her 'hot pakoda' dance in slowmo seems irrelevant.

Overall, the characters are crazy enough to amuse you with their shenanigans. If you don't mind a cliched story, Beri villa is worth a visit.

Final verdict:

"Crazy Cukkad Family' is funny, but for the wrong reasons"
